Territories Uncharted, in my travels I came across an elderly Native woman who shared with me stories about ancient towering sheer cliffs, legends of animals and indigenous faces that would appear in the rocks holding the memories and history of their culture where the Indians gathered around a circle of fire. Taking a few notes, I felt inspired to go search for these cliffs to see for myself if these legends still exist today. Not knowing a specific location, but the desert name gave me a 100 miles radius to start my search. After several days hiking seeking guidance, crossing several desert canyons and cliff basins I came across some cliffs which looked like ancient animal carvings as tall as the cliff, weathering away a bird-like sentinel still standing. Spending the day hiking around taking photos. That afternoon, seeing tribal smoke signals over this territory. The following day in the distance, I saw 3 wild-painted horses appear. I headed their way, following them; I felt there were 3 native spirit warriors riding them, guiding me as I followed them hiking up to this hill where they turned around looking at me. I saw what they were looking at, feeling this amazing spiritual energy around me, seeing cliffs of fire with several natives appearing along them as I looked toward the 3 native warriors thanking them as they galloped away.

Searching for lost legends, I was prompted to search an area of the Rocky Mountains a range that I have visited several times throughout the years, though I had only ever found petroglyphs nearby. Although I spent most of the day hiking around this mountain and wanted to move on, the ancient spirits here told me differently. As evening approached, the spirit prompted me to cross over the valley and watch the mountain. As the sun was setting, hitting this mountain, waking it up, Its spirit hit me like lightning, transforming into a Native warrior revealing his war cry. As I saw his buckskin bone-armor breastplate, his weathered face, his head feather, and his eyes looking right at me. knew he would disappear in minutes without a trace, as if he had never been here in this sacred spot. This was one of the few shots I took before he disappeared into the sunset. Having been here several times in the past, I learned how skillful and powerful he is at hiding in the landscape….

Territories Uncharted: Searching for Lost Legends, Driving through Arches National Park, Utah, I heard a big, thundercloud-like echo looking right at me. A big stone chief monument appeared as I drove past him right along the highway. Hearing him again, I felt like he wanted his photo taken. I turned around and headed back, looking for a good shot as he started to reveal his mysteries of the ancient natives who left their markings. Weathered but strong, he still stands there covered in red tribal colors, his nose reaching the cliff tops, and eyes of thunder revealing this warrior overlooking his territory. You can still hear their drums that once sounded here in the passing thunderclouds, echoing through these desert canyons and reflecting the heartbeat of their past for all to hear..

She moved me quickly into position to take her photos, knowing how fast the shifting light moves here. I passed walls covered in ancient petroglyphs, taking photos and wondering what stories they might tell or what mysteries they could reveal. Walking these narrow canyons, I knew I was retracing Indigenous trails. In my chase for the uncharted, I finally caught an ancient echo; following intuitive promptings, I felt I was closing in on something hidden deep within the stones. Then, seamlessly concealed between the towering sandstone walls, an ancient guardian appeared right where I stood. A sentinel weathered, covered in tribal colors with patches of war paint, his sharp eyes holding the power to see all who dared enter the canyon. Standing as imposing as the canyon walls themselves, he was a true warrior. I could sense his skill with a spear-many of which were hidden along the rocky crevices-and it was clear he had survived countless battles. He could have taken my life in an instant. Instead, he let me live to capture his photograph and share the story of the ancient ones..
